Why is it important to care for our pets' ears?

We know our pets aren't big fans of ear cleanings. Their ears are sensitive, so regular and careful ear care for dogs and cats will help prevent and detect any problems and/or infections. However, if not done correctly, it can lead to ear problems and loss of sensitivity.

The ears of dogs and cats are very sensitive, and as wax and oils accumulate inside the ear, they can become increasingly prone to fungal and bacterial infections over time. External factors such as excess moisture or allergies can further increase the risk of infections.

Signs that your pet may have developed an ear infection include:

  • Bad smell around or inside the ear
  • Secretions
  • Swelling or redness of the ear canal
  • Excessive pawing or scratching of ears

It's important to identify these types of signs and consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your pet.

How to clean your dog's ears at home?

Regular cleaning and care can help prevent ear infections. It's a good idea to get into the habit of inspecting your pet's ears weekly. This will not only help you detect infections or problems earlier, but will also make your pet feel comfortable having their ears touched. To clean your pet's ears at home, we recommend using our water-based, irritant-free Health 4 Pets Ear Flushes, which prevent the growth of fungus and bacteria . Hold your pet's ear upright and apply a small amount of our ear flush into the ear canal. As the flush filters into the canal, use your fingers to massage the base of the ear for about 15-20 seconds. Your dog or cat may want to shake their head after you finish this part of the cleaning process. Use cotton to wipe away excess solution and any loose earwax until the ear is fairly dry. After drying, you can use our Anti-Fungal Wipes if your pet has been diagnosed with bacterial or fungal otitis.
